Level 3: Immediate Management of Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that demands a fast, confident response. Without the right treatment it can be fatal — and without the right training, even experienced first aiders can hesitate at the moment that matters most.

This specialist one-day course equips qualified First Aiders, Emergency First Aiders and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to recognise anaphylaxis, differentiate it from a standard allergic reaction, and treat it safely and effectively — including the correct use of adrenaline auto-injectors.

Suitable for all First Aiders, healthcare professionals and those working in high-risk environments where adrenaline auto-injectors (such as EpiPens) are available.

Syllabus: 1 Day

Learners will be able to:

  • Describe anaphylaxis and identify common triggers

  • Recognise the life-threatening problems associated with airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status and skin changes

  • Explain the need for an early call for help

  • Describe and carry out the treatment for anaphylaxis, including use of a non-rebreather mask and removal of the trigger

  • Identify the key features of adrenaline auto-injectors

  • Conduct an initial assessment using the ABCDE approach

  • Demonstrate the recovery position

  • Demonstrate adult and child resuscitation

  • Prepare and administer medication during anaphylaxis treatment

  • Demonstrate the safe use of an adrenaline auto-injector using a training device

  • Safely dispose of sharps in line with agreed ways of working

  • Hand over the casualty to a medical professional
